Stop Requested: Broadway and West First Avenue
Home to some of Denver’s most iconic bars, restaurants and nightlife, South Broadway, AKA “SoBo,” is one of Denver’s most vibrant entertainment hubs. The neighborhood has everything needed to make a day relaxing and the night a movie. Grab some friends and catch the Route 0 down to Broadway and West First Avenue in this edition of Stop Requested.
During the day, SoBo is a colorful and vibrant place to enjoy a low-key Saturday afternoon. Right at the bus stop, visitors are greeted by Punch Bowl Social, an iconic Denver staple. Punch Bowl Social manages to pack an entire afternoon’s worth of activities into a single building, including eight bowling lanes, karaoke, ping pong, billiards, foosball, giant Jenga and even an arcade. Punch Bowl also has tons of food and drink specials to make the afternoon one for the books.
After enjoying some games at Punch Bowl, head north along Broadway to the most hardcore brewery around – TRVE Brewing Company. TRVE is not the typical brewery. Founded by a love for heavy metal and metal culture, TRVE is for those who like to live loud and fast. While TRVE has the traditional pale ales, sours and lagers, they also are not afraid to experiment. They have beers that combine styles to create something unique and different. TRVE is a must-visit for beer lovers and metalheads. Pair a visit to TRVE before catching a metal show at The HQ. More in the mood for wine? Postino Broadway is the place to go. Postino has a variety of domestic and international wines ready to enjoy. Don’t forget to catch a movie at the legendary Mayan Theatre, a classic theater built back in the 1930s that shows today’s biggest blockbusters and independent movies.
Once the sun sets, SoBo comes alive. Start the night right by swinging by Go Fish Sushi, where the incredibly talented chefs bring out sushi trays that could be displayed in the Denver Art Museum. The dishes are Instagram-worthy. Go Fish also serves poke, nigiri and sashimi, and has a large variety of sakes to enjoy. After dinner, head across the street to Canopy, a fantastic bar that specializes in “prohibition-era” cocktails in a vibrant setting. Head south across Ellsworth Avenue and continue the night at Players Pub, a barcade that has tons of iconic arcade games like Tekken, The Simpsons, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Star Wars Pinball and, of course, Skee-Ball. Players Pub specializes in house-made infused shots to help visitors level up their night.
Of course, every visit to SoBo must include popping into the iconic Irish Rover Pub, a true staple of the SoBo neighborhood. The Irish Rover derives its name from an Irish folk song of the same name. The folk song tells the story of a ship that came to an unfortunate demise out at sea. The song can be heard at pubs across Ireland, and after a couple of ales and whiskeys, it can be heard loudly at the Irish Rover, too. After a fun night out along SoBo, swing by one of the best places to grab a late-night slice in all of Colorado – Pie Hole.
