RTD celebrates the anniversaries of the W and G Lines

On April 26th, RTD celebrates the anniversaries of the W and G Lines. RTD opened the W line from Denver to Golden in 2013. Six years later, the G line from Denver to Wheat Ridge opened to customers. Both lines are part of the 2004 voter approved FasTracks plan to expand transit service across the Denver metro region.

Originally called the West Line, the W Line uses light rail vehicles to move customers along a 12.1-mile corridor. Station locations provide customers easy access to government services (Jefferson County Government Center), higher education institutions (Red Rocks Community College, Auraria Higher Education Campus), large employers (Federal Center), and entertainment venues (Mile High Stadium). As customers ride the rail, they can enjoy eight art installations and nearly 36 relay houses wrapped with artist designs along the route.

RTD’s G Line differs from the W Line in that it uses commuter rail vehicles instead of light rail vehicles. These larger-capacity vehicles have level boarding and above-seating storage. Commuter rail vehicles on the G Line run on an 11.2-mile track that stretches from Wheat Ridge in the west to Arvada and finally Denver in the east. Olde Town Arvada Station is one of the commuter rail’s most popular stops. Prior to revenue service, the G Line was called the Gold Line, as it passes by the site of a gold discovery in Colorado.

By providing connections to locations across the west and northern Denver metro area, RTD’s W and G Lines make it convenient and affordable to travel by train.
