Police Cadet Student Program Starting Fall 2024
The RTD Transit Police Department Cadet position is a specialized training and education program for full-time college students looking to become active in the community. Cadets will be assigned administrative duties and participate in department and community events as well as training that teaches skills essential to pursuing a career in public safety. Some of the trainings include self-defense tactics, radio communications and conflict resolution.

To enroll in the RTD Cadet Corps, a candidate must:
- Be at least 20 years old and eligible to meet the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification including age requirements (21 years old) to be a police officer upon graduation.
- Be a full-time college student with at least 90 credits at the time of hire. Students must have a 2.0 GPA, earn a minimum of 12 credits each semester and be in a 4-year degree program at a Colorado accredited institution in good academic standing.
Academy Tuition Assistance and Other Benefits
Upon successful completion of the Cadet program, Cadets who meet the requirements to be hired as a PO1 are eligible to receive RTD sponsorship at a Colorado POST approved academy.

Do I have to be a college student?
Yes, you must be a full-time college student with at least 90 credits to be accepted in the program.
Do I need to attend a specific school?
No, you just need to be enrolled at a Colorado accredited institution and must be able to physically work in the Denver area.
Does RTD cover any school related expenses?
No, once accepted in the program RTD will pay an hourly salary. Some institutions may provide credit based on the work responsibilities performed.
What do I need to wear once accepted?
RTD will provide a polo shirt. You will need to wear cargo style pants and a pair of black sneakers/boots.
What’s next after I graduate college?
Upon successful completion of the Cadet program, RTD will pay for you to attend the police academy to be POST certified and you will be hired as a police officer with the agency.
