RTD visits the Anythink Commerce City library
To promote access to literacy, RTD partnered with Anythink Library to host a transit-themed story time. The eight-branch library system serves residents living in Adams County. Located at 7185 Monaco Street, the Commerce City branch, where the story time was held, is on the same block as RTD Routes 49 and 88, which connect Commerce City to other areas in the eastern Denver metro area.
Brandon Figliolino, Senior Specialist of Community Engagement, read Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Williams and The Bus is for Us by Michael Rosen to families. With every page turn, kids talked about how they have ridden “big buses,” “cool” bikes and trains that “go really fast.” The community room was filled with smiles and laughs.
Once the story time ended, Annette MacNeal, bus instructor, showed the young audience the different components of a bus, including the steering wheel, control switches and intercom system. Children gleefully honked the bus’s horn. Off the bus, Vivian Morales, Civil Rights Specialist, chatted with parents about fares and available discount programs.
Feedback from the community was positive. One parent said that they told their child about the event earlier in the week after seeing a promotion on social media. Their child, they said, was so excited they had played the song “The Wheels on the Bus” all week.
