RTD downtown rail work begins today on intersections at 15th at Stout and California

Tara Broghammer

RTD began construction today on two 15th Street intersections at Stout and California as part of the agency’s currently underway near-term downtown light rail reconstruction project. The work along 15th Street, which is expected to last approximately three weeks, will be conducted simultaneously at both intersections.

Upon completion of the full-depth reconstruction work on 15th Street, crews will move to 17th Street, where the intersections at California and Stout will also be completely reconstructed. The work along 17th Street is also expected to last approximately three weeks.

Beginning today, RTD’s Free MallRide service will operate on 15th and 17th streets between Denver Union Station and Champa Street. The MallRide service will be temporarily suspended between Curtis Street and Civic Center Station until completion of the downtown rail reconstruction work in September. Customers needing to connect to Civic Center Station beyond Curtis Street are encouraged to use the Free MetroRide service as an alternative within the Central Business District. The Free MetroRide service was added in May to support the Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project.

The Free MetroRide operates along 18th and 19th streets between Civic Center and Union Station every 10 minutes, seven days a week between 5:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Free MallRide also operates on a 10-minute frequency.

About the Project

RTD’s Rail Reconstruction project serves to improve five intersections in downtown Denver that are at-grade crossings for the agency’s D, H and L light rail lines. The work is part of a full-depth reconstruction of the Downtown Loop segment of RTD’s light rail track, which has been in place since service first began in 1994. Replacing this section is necessary to improve safety and mobility, address deteriorating transit infrastructure and extend the life of a crucial piece of Denver’s public transportation system.

Visit the Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project webpage for more information about the project and to sign up for text and email notifications about future and real-time rail and bus service impacts. Customers are encouraged to use RTD’s Next Ride app to plan your trip, view active Service Alerts and see bus and train locations in real-time.
