Racist signs reported at multiple RTD bus stops in the metro area

DENVER (August 29, 2024) –– The Regional Transportation District (RTD) is working with local authorities to investigate multiple racist signs that were placed at bus stops along Colfax Avenue. A bus operator first reported a sign at approximately 5 a.m. at a bus stop near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Oneida Street. The metal sign was attached to the bus stop’s pole with rivets and appears to have been installed shortly before it was reported.

Two additional signs were also found at bus stops near the intersections of Colfax Avenue and Garfield Street, as well as Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street. RTD Transit Police is coordinating with the Denver Police Department to investigate each of the incidents. RTD will continue to work closely with local authorities to identify the individual(s) responsible. Agency staff is also coordinating with the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) to check for the presence of additional signs.

RTD strongly condemns the hateful, discriminatory message portrayed by the signs. There is no place for racism or discrimination at RTD or within the communities we serve. The signs do not reflect the organization’s adopted values or promote a welcoming transit environment for all, nor should such vile messaging be tolerated or supported by anyone.

Earlier today, RTD learned that similar signs also recently appeared at Chicago Transit Authority bus stops. RTD is in the process of connecting with other transit agencies across the country to assess the magnitude of the coordinated racist activity.

RTD is asking customers and the public to report any suspicious behavior that they may have observed near the agency’s bus stops during the early morning hours. Anonymous or discreet tips can be shared using RTD’s Transit Watch app, by calling Transit Police dispatch at 303.299.2911, or texting 303.434.9100.
