Interview with RTD Operator, Tony Lindsay

When Tony Lindsay wasn’t driving the Route 169, he was leading the Far Northeast Warriors (formerly Montbello) to their first-ever state championship. The team shut out Boulder High School 34-0 on Saturday, May 15, at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl Stadium in Pueblo.

Tony — who is the first Black head coach in the state of Colorado to win a high school championship game — has worked for RTD since 1999 with a five-year break from 2001-2006.

“I like driving a bus; I'm a people person,” he says.

But coaching is his passion. He has been coaching high school football for 30 years.

“This was meant for me. This is my purpose; this what I was put here to do: mentor, try to send kids to college and grow them up."

“Our family is a football family,” Tony said. He coached his nephew, former Broncos and CU Buffs star Phillip Lindsay, at South High School. He has four sons who played football and now they coach with him at Far Northeast. Tony played for the University of Utah and his brother, Troy Lindsay—Phillip Lindsay’s father and also an RTD bus operator—went to Colorado State University. Troy’s two other sons played college football as well.

Tony joined Far Northeast in 2017 after 10 successful seasons at South High School, a decade in which he’d posted a 78-33 mark and reached the playoffs in seven of those campaigns, according to The Denver Post.

“The Far Northeast community – Green Valley, Montbello – is excited about the state championship victory and it’s a good thing,” Tony said.
